THOSE WHO SAY, "IS HE NOT RIGHTLY NAMED JACOB?" - The Mystery Of Election Series 001
"And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? For he hath supplanted me there two times: he took away my birthright; and behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?"
When this series on election came to me, it came when I remembered what could have been the accusations of someone who might have thought I took - snatched for myself the office (position) that should have been his and probably married the woman that could have probably been his as well.
He could have accused me of having stolen from him twice for obvious reasons. That's what brought this verse that I quoted above. He never knew that I myself never thought or planned to have those things he said I had for myself. Rather, God chose me for them and them for me. Election made it so and not that I intentionally cheated him out of anything that was his to have.
Have you ever been elected by God before? Have you ever heard people protest saying, "This is unjust! Why should he be chosen?"
Until you experience the clamouring of the people and their protests, you may never know you can even petition God to give what He has given to you to them. Why? Because you want to be at peace. Because you don't want to be seen and taken as an enemy who snatched what is humanly expected to be someone's.
That's the case with Jacob who was chosen above his twin brother, Esau. Esau cried. You can feel the emotion, pain and disappointment in his voice. He was begging for answers and as well raising an accusatory voice as to why everything works for Jacob and not him.
Have you been where it seems someone is always favored above or over you before? You might need to probe if it is divine election that has made it so. If it is, don't topple or attack it. What God has set in place, you shouldn't be found reconsidering it lest you're found to be kicking against God.
Esau says, "Is he not rightly named Jacob?"
Look at what he's blaming. Divine election is at work but he couldn't see that larger picture. Rather, he began to blame it on Jacob's crookedness and smartness. No! That he ever outsmarted Esau in the first place and it worked was because God allowed it by divine permission. God allowed it because it'll serve His own purpose of having ordained Jacob to continue the lineage and pass the covenant blessings down the line.
"Is he not rightly named Jacob? First he supplanted me of my birthright and now he has robbed me of my blessings", Esau cries.
What is this? Is it true that Jacob is at fault? There's no one who hears or reads this verse who will not sympathize with Esau. He has lost something that should be his and he's all blaming it on Jacob who stole it from him. He said, "He was named Jacob fittingly for that."
Election always comes with a sense of injustice to the humans watching but what can a pot say to the potter, "Why have you made me thus?" We are God's creatures and He, our Creator. He does with us what He likes. He chooses whom He wants and walks with any He ordains. Not because of works or anything they have done but that the purpose of His election might come to pass.
Until you're elected, you won't understand why people fight to be elected. The reason is because according to natural order, the elected ought to be bypassed. The first born in Esau ought to retain the birthright and be the blessed one, however it goes to Jacob, the twin brother or younger brother if we were to look at their birth order.
People will try to explain it away. They'll say, "Is he not rightly named this and that? Is it not because he's their favourite?" However, the discerning will see God's election. They'll see God's perpetuation at work that chose a man that doesn't believe or think he himself will be elected. That's why such elected men can't boast also. Rather, they are pressed by the demands, responsibilities and calling placed on them. What they must not turn out to be is a failure who didn't fulfill why God raised them.
Brethren, election may not affirm our natural sense of justice and demands but it sure will fulfill God's purpose. Don't be caught fighting it. Rather, align with it and be a beneficiary of God's election even when you're not the elected. Locate yourself in the prophecies of the prophesied and you'll see that an atmosphere shall be created for you also. Rather than fighting someone's election, why don't you find what God has called, ordained and also elected you for? Why have I said this? Because you too are also called and ordained for something.
PRAYER: Lord, I submit to your election. May I discover my election and work with God on that.
