LIKE A PELICAN OF THE WILDERNESS AND LIKE A SPARROW ALONE ON THE HOUSE TOP - One Alone Series 001

Psalms 102:6-7, KJV

"6 I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert. 7 I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top."

You will grow and mature. To grow and mature - become gold, you may need to visit the furnace. Else, you cannot shine nor Christ's character outworked in you! But one thing I'm assured is that you won't remain the same because God will not treat you as a bastard. He's not only a bastard who is not amended or chastised but a bastard, he who does not pass through the fire and the burning furnace of character formation (Heb.12:8). How shall he be refined and how can we say such is God's and God is for him?

Back to the verse of the day. It says in NLT, "6 I am like an owl in the desert, like a little owl in a far wilderness 7 I lie awake, lonely as a solitary bird on the roof." Have you been in a situation before where you only see yourself. You look around and it's only you the mess surrounds. That's the kind of situation the psalmist found himself as he wrote this lament. There are situations that when you're in them, there's nothing you can do but to endure it because God is not ready to let that cup pass over you. You just have to drink it so that a quality Christian would be produced by the time you excellently passed through it having maintained the right attitude. It's like a wild animal taken into a cage and intended to stay there before its final release back into the wild. Though it's not its habit not to roam, yet being in the cage, it has been restrained and limited in movement. It probably is now all alone in the cage. It could love to hunt various prey but it'll have to make do with the meats offered on the short plate now.

All alone, seated in despair and depression. Mind the birds referred to in this passage. They are ones identified with desolation and ruins. For instance, the pelican of the wilderness. We know the wilderness is not very different from a desert, considering its desolation and this bird is such a solitary one. "I am like an owl of the desert" only comes to reinforce this more.

All these similes tell of the experience of the psalmist and how separated from the human community he is. Irrespective of what the cause of his experience is, there's a pain being experienced. He's the only one in it. He owns that experience and no one could tell it like him.

He might have been forsaken and left behind. It is this that makes Him watch...as a sparrow alone on the house top.

For some days, we shall explore these verses further and some issues surrounding it. Remain with us.

PRAYER: Father, keep me in my temptation and solitude experience hours.
