THE PRIVILEGE OF A PIONEER - For The Sake Of A Room Series 004
Genesis 2:19, KJV
"And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof."
Somebody could not let go. Despite the solace and comfort provided him, he would still fight to have his claims accepted. He was criticizing why everything had to be hard and why it seems to enter a field or a profession, you have to battle with diverse gates and gatekeepers. His justification was, "in their own times (speaking of the established professionals - fathers of that field), they only strolled in. No hard core rule on ground. Nobody bound a mill stone on their neck; but now, they're asking for heaven and earth from us. Should that be?
I know the problem of this brother. Irrespective of how long he fights, he won't still get justified. The reason is simple. It was nobody's fault or those he was accusing that things have come to be established as it is. When those ones came in, there may be no ground rules truly but things were scattered and not established as they were now. It was those ones who by years of practice discovered the most acceptable ways to do things, wrote it down as laws to follow and as standard behavior or ways of life. They had to suffer finding out the way or the acceptable ways of doing things. And in truth, their suffering could be said to be an untold one. Take that privilege as their compensation!
That'll take us to today's devotional title - the privilege of pioneers. What is the privilege of pioneers? That's what I want to show you and I've already started showing you.
Pioneers may enter roughly without any standard rule in place but they decide the fate of others by setting rules in place that'll guide the entering and acts of other incomers. This is not cheating. Look at Nigeria for instance. Our first set of leaders were very young. Tafawa Balewa was 48, Olusegun Obasanjo (military rule) was 38,
Aguiyi-Ironsi was 41, Mohammed was 36 and
Yakubu Gowon was 31. Compare that with the age dominating politics nowadays. So, an undiscerning mind might pick a case on why youths must be made space for based on this earlier experiment that brought some in. But life doesn't always work like that. If you're pioneers, you may enjoy the privilege of entering while the standard is low. But watch it, once the system stabilizes and starts running, the bar is raised. That's why you must be a pioneer. Only few rules ever bind you but you rather create the rules of the system or field you belong to. You don't need to act selfishly in creating favourable rules, since the field is what you pioneer, the rules can't but attune to what you have found out and have lived for so far.
Look at Adam! When he hits the ground running, God brings all the animals to him. The Bible says, "it's whatever he calls them they bear." That's the privilege of a founder or pioneer. It's whatever he calls them they bear. Pick any subject or field of study, foundational laws, the terms and terminologies being used there were set and coined by the first comers. They may even name or coin concepts after their names. They're just above debate. Everybody will follow suit and will continue to herald them even hundreds of years after their demise. No rule that says, "this is how to name or conceptualize this thing in their day. Things were still scattered." Even if it'll later change, theirs would have passed as a model and a reference point even before a better way of doing things comes in. Why? They had laid when no one was there to lay! It therefore becomes, "things bearing whatsoever they name them!" No ground rules! No refusal of whatsoever they call or term it. It is whatever they name things they bear. Pioneers are so special that they get honourable treatments. Even if there are loopholes in their theories, formulas or any given framework, you must be careful how you criticize or make the world see the need for improvement lest they call you a usurper or one just looking for attention. Even if certain improvements are accepted, references can't but still be made to them.
What a privilege being a pioneer. It might be easy to start when there are no ground rules but I'm sure you also don't want to be the one to suffer in finding out the best practices and methods of practices in your field. While there's a privilege, there's also a responsibility.
PRAYER: I heed my own call and I tap the grace that goes with it.
