Happy New Month!!!
MORNING WINGS DAILY DEVOTIONAL - Olusola ADEJUMO
WILL YOU SHOW YOURSELF A WORTHY MAN?
I Kings 1:52, KJV
"And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die."
I began a teaching yesterday through which God has begun to evacuate impurities from our lives. The psalmist cries saying, "23 search me O God and know my heart: try me and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting" (Psalms 139:23-24). That was the heartcry of the psalmist as he sought to be made perfect. He never withheld himself from being searched and found out. He knew that would make him a better person. He even demanded for that search so that what is hidden in his life as negative characters or attitudes but which is like a time bomb waiting to blow up might be disarmed early. May this be your heart cry too. That God will do you the favour of showing you your imperfections so that you can correct your errors and grow into being perfect. If your imperfections follow you to the top, it'll lead to your downfall. However, if you're this early purged of them, you will have a safe stay in the palace. Until you're tried by God, you may not consent that your heart is wicked or you're capable of certain wickedness. However, if He does and shows you to yourself, you'll have no choice but to surrender and take the testimony of the Lord as true.
However, we'll be examining Adonijah today. Solomon made a statement on Adonijah when he was retrieved from the horns of the altar and was forgiven for his treachery in trying to seize the throne and the kingdom from Solomon whom God has rightly given it.
"And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die."
You'll think after this saving grace Adonijah received, he would conduct himself worthily. However, he wouldn't relent from the kingship race though it shows clearly he has been knocked off and the throne gone to who rightly owns it. What step did Adonijah take therefore? He thought of rivalling the king and sharing his bed with him by requesting for Abishag, the beautiful lady who tended to David and lied in his bosom to give him warmth while alive. David couldn't have sexual intimacy with Abishag due to old age but has been passed to Solomon as the inheritance of the reigning king. That's what Adonijah came to ask for and that request shows what he actually wanted - the throne. Solomon knew this when he responded to his mother in a most sarcastic way.
I Kings 2:22, KJV
"And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he is mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah."
Let me ask you, "have you been forgiven somewhere before but with warning to show yourself worthily?" Don't disappoint yourself! Better show yourself worthily. Do you think you can continue in sin and say grace should abound? Do you think you can continue violating God's laws and sinning willfully and habitually yet delighting God? If repeated failures anger men, don't you think it displeases God as well? Is there a matter that has been decided but which for ego and competition sake you have refused to let go - abiding by the rightful court ruling? If you continue this way when it clearly shows fair judgement has been passed already, you'll not only incur God's wrath for wanting to turn fair judgement over but the law's. Adonijah never agreed that he has a problem which is ego. He's evil and despite having been forgiven for his grievous sin, which was worthy of death, he still went around peddling and looking for ways to have in-roads into Solomon's life and probably gain grounds to assert his kingship. This prayer of the psalmist still peaks in my heart. Each and everyone of us must cry that God will search us and show us wickedness in our hearts before they find us out. If you've been living in denial of a weakness or vulnerability, I'll say repent. Not doing so and strengthening yourself over that thing will spell future calamity for you. If Ananias and Sapphira had known, they would have prayed that God would search them, find them out and purge them of deceit, lying tongue, competition/ lust for out-rivalling others and lack of integrity. If that had been sorted out, they wouldn't have confronted the Holy Ghost in the life of Peter. Peter blatantly told Ananias in Acts 5:3, "why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?"
May it become our heart cry this new month to be purged of every strand of wickedness that can grow from foothold to stronghold in our lives.
PRAYER: Firmly search me out and reveal myself to me. Let me be dealt with before sin and unhealthy character leads to my downfall.
