THE POSSIBILITY OF BACKSLIDING - Minding Your Calling Series 003

Matthew 8:21, KJV

"21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.  22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead."

There's the possibility of backsliding or going back on your call. If you looked at the two verses above, you'll see that the fellow who raised the issue of going back with Jesus is someone the Bible recognizes as a "disciple."

A disciple is someone with a call to follow and who may be already following. However, this brother received a situation report where he was serving as an apprentice in order to become a master in the footsteps of Jesus that a family member just died and that he must be involved in the burial rites. Who will not want to pay his last respect to his father?

Then, the temptation arose. What's the temptation? The temptation to participate. The temptation to be seen to have participated. The temptation not to be a lesser son of one's father. The temptation to be called a good son by the community for having shown up. So, he told Jesus to let him go back and attend to the family - to the burying of his father.

However, what did Jesus reply with. "Follow me and let the dead bury their dead."

Do you know why Jesus responded with that? While it's good to pay last respect to our parents, family or the dead yet it must not be at the expense of our calling or the destiny training that we shouldn't carry over. Priority is necessary in this life. The dead is dead and gone. His assignment has ended. He cannot desire or devise to do anything again. So, why should a man that has achieved his own and closed his chapter take you out of your own holy call to follow Jesus even where you are in the hinterland serving as a missionary, a gospel bearer or a minister. Jesus is teaching us priority. Whenever there is a clash between services to God and social occasions, we know which to let go.

Don't worry. The dead will be taken care of. When Jesus said, "let the dead bury their dead", it means there are certain people on ground already who'll ensure the dead man is given a befitting burial. As for you, God has collected you for Himself. You're His chosen and because you are, you must be sanctified and hallowed unto Him. God has special jealousy protecting you from any other thing that wants to use you or have your attention. That's why Jesus' reply to that man was, "follow me, let the dead bury their dead."

God will continue to free your time especially if you have calling, are called or have been sent. God wants you to have time not only to imitate Him but to serve Him. As such, God can raise certain people to do some common assignments that you could have been distracted to do. By this, He preserves you for the holy and your calling. As long as you carry the vow to serve God that is second to none and it shows in your heart, God will free time for you. He'll give you a job that doesn't contest with your Bible Study or preaching engagements. He'll preserve your time out of jealousy and you'll remain the sanctified and separated of the Lord.

I pray for you, nothing shall take you out of God's presence, His imitation and His service.

PRAYER: Lord, may I decipher between the common and the holy. May I not allow emotion and attachment to family to get the better of me.

LET THE DEAD BURY THEIR DEAD - Minding Your Calling Series 002

Matthew 8:21, KJV

"21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.  22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead."

How easily we are distracted in this life! Today, God will be meeting the needs of those of you who have received certain instructions from God but have receded from it. Some of you know you're called for sure and that you've heard the Master's voice saying, "you, follow me." However, over time, you have had need to stop following to go back to the things Jesus saved you from. He saved you from the distraction of, "all these things (riches in the world)" that you're now pursuing when He told you to follow Him in discipleship so He could make you a fisher of men and deliver you into your calling like He made of the apostles in the Bible.

However, what's the story we're reading about you now? That you've gone back. That you've backslided. Though you began with Jesus but you didn't walk the whole miles. You went back somewhere. You went back to your vomit and became a sorry case.

That Bible portion we're considering says, "you follow me but let the dead bury their dead."

It is their dead - their responsibility and affairs to take care of. When you were called to follow Jesus so you could be delivered into ministry, you were saved from the chase of those common things. God is saying I should tell you, "you have a bounty (calling) on your head. You have received a call to follow Me as an apprentice so you can become a master someday in the calling." It means you have to be focused, concentrated on your training and the lifestyle that'll make you that outcome. You therefore cannot or should not be caught minding the businesses of other men who haven't received your own  call.

What God is advocating for is specialization of jobs. Each of you have received your tasks. Why should you now be called from your own divine call and task to the secular and common again?

Mind your business brethren is the voice re-echoing.

PRAYER: May I not entangle myself with the common.

LET THE DEAD BURY THEIR DEAD - Minding Your Calling Series 001

Matthew 8:21 - 22, KJV

"21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead."

I believe I am called and that I am anointed to bring an anointed explanation to my audience as I teach. Over the years, this has been proven beyond any shadow of doubt to God's glory.

In Good Morrow by John Donne, the poet writes:

"Let sea-discoverers to new worlds have gone,

Let maps to others, worlds on worlds have shown,

Let us possess one world, each hath one, and is one."

In this monologue, the speaker's address is to a lover. Despite the many ongoing activities or businesses in the world they live in at that time, he (the speaker) canvasses for solitude time with the lover where both of them could intertwine. It's for this reason the poet says, "let sea discoverers to new worlds have gone..." It means while they are busy discovering new worlds (because that's their own assignment which they love more than life), we also shall be busy, wrapped in each others' arms - enjoying love (in our own cocoon).

These expounded lines have a message to pass to you. We all cannot be busy on a thing. We've been given different subject matters and assignments to mind in this life. While sea discoverers to new worlds have gone, the speaker is rather possessing one world with the lover. He begs to differ!

What a world! A world of many assignments and mandates. A world where we have arrays of vocations that call men to themselves and from which men must choose which one they'll give their lives or time to.

That's why a statement like, "you, follow me but let the dead bury their dead" finds fulfillment as a reality. In the next few days, may you be well rounded in calling, consecration and the need to pursue with all diligence that which you have been called and separated to.

The poet speaker in this poem does not have eyes for going on wide and bogus adventures to find new sea or trade routes or discover new worlds. Rather, he's concerned with home and cordial affairs with the lover. He has found something to mind and concentrate on different from what others esteem and are dying for. That's why the Bible says:

Psalms 104:16-18, KJV

"16 The trees of the LORD are full of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted; 17 Where the birds make their nests: as for the stork, the fir trees are her house. 18 The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies."

As for the stork (a type of bird), the fir trees are her house. That's the colony she has found to colonize, enjoy and live in. But the same does not apply to the wild goats. The high hills are her house while again the conies choose the rocks to live in.

You'll see that all of them are not called to colonize the same territory. They rather have a focus on which particular area to subdue or colonize. As for the wild goats, look no more, the high hills are her house! Are you looking to contact the wild goats? Go to the high hills.

What catches our attention or what we give it to will always be different. In this life and in your race as a Christian, may it be that it'll be only your calling that'll command your attention and have you fully. Amen!

MADE JUST FOR YOU! - Positioned For Divine Attention Series 005

Genesis 2:20, KJV

"And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him."

The Bible says, "and for Adam, there was not found a helpmeet for him." In the former teachings in this series, I had told you who a helpmeet was and what purpose he or she serves in your life. Have you seen hook and eye before? Each of those materials are right for each other because they help each other fulfill their roles. The eye is made so that the hook can easily have a penetration into it and cling to it. If one was not suitably made for its other partner, there wouldn't have been harmony that we see with the hook and eye. They are a perfect example of a helpmeet to each other. They meet the needs of each other.

When the Bible says, "and there was not found a helpmeet for Adam", it means after a search of a kind, no mate was found for Adam who could fittingly fit who he was made and what he was given to do. No animal despite how well created it is could fittingly play the role of a wife in the life of Adam. There couldn't have been any connection or understanding between them. Animals and humans are not of the same species. So, they shouldn't even mate though they can bond or relate. God put that into consideration as well before the Bible says, "but for Adam there was not found a helpmeet for him (amidst all perused)." If it was an animal God had brought, Adam wouldn't have said, "this is the bone of my bones and the flesh of my flesh..." Why? There'll be an obvious denial because that animal would have been very far from the very image or likeness of Adam (a human). Adam wouldn't have seen himself in her! That's why that verse says, "and for Adam there was not found a helpmeet for him." But what happened when Eve was paraded before Adam. Adam gave a cry, "this is the bone of my bones and the flesh of my flesh: she shall be called a woman because she was taken out of man." He saw himself in her. Indeed, was it not Adam's bone (a rib) that God made into a woman? No wonder, the semblance Adam noticed.

The usage of "not found" in that verse shows a kind of observatory search might have been done on creation but without a testimony of having found a mate for Adam. Don't think God is not at work on your behalf. If you haven't had His feedback, it may be that He hasn't found for you a helpmeet yet. Don't forget, a helpmeet is the hook that can fit effortlessly into your eye. Compatibility is important to consider here and God does that. If he or she is a Muslim or any other unbeliever, he or she isn't different from the animals that aren't suitable for Adam. The command is that you must not be joined to an unbeliever in marriage (II Cor. 6:14).

Vehicles are machines designed for transportation. They come in many forms, each created for specific purposes. Cars are primarily for personal transport of a few individuals, offering convenience and privacy. Jeeps are renowned for their ruggedness, versatility and exceptional off-road abilities. Seeing this, if you're going for a military expedition, you're likely to go with a jeep rather than an ordinary car as jeeps were originally designed as light military reconnaissance vehicles during World War II, proving their ability to traverse incredibly challenging terrain.

The same goes with a choice of a marriage partner. We don't have the same nature or temperaments. One who's forgetful or careless by nature as a phlegmatic/sanguine may need a complement in a choleric/melancholy who does things perfectly to details and on time. What God does is to give you a complement. So, when that Bible verse says, "but for Adam, there was not found a helpmeet", it means one who'll understand and partner with Adam at his level was not found for him. Don't forget a rib was missing in Adam which went into the creation of Eve. This metaphorically hints at needs in the life of Adam that only Eve - that right woman: who's the perfect lost rib could fill because a space or need was created in Adam when a rib was removed from him. Spouses are like vehicles. They come in different forms. Some are for pleasure and some for rugged terrains. For certain reasons i.e the calling of suffering on some people; they might need to be given a spouse that is like a jeep - rugged, enduring, not easily angered etc. If you're a man who'll be away for months, you need to have a rugged wife who can carry on with the kids behind you as if you never existed in her life. You need a woman who lightly esteems sex and envies affection when she sees others having it. You need a woman or a man who cannot backslide into adultery because you've gone on a study, business trip, evangelistic crusades etc.

As such, God makes for each of us to suit us. It is bread and butter that can complement themselves. God is that wise. Look, God knows your frame, yearnings, character, weaknesses, strengths, future problems, calling. He makes a spouse for you who can fit into all these. Until then, you haven't found a helpmeet. If the opposite happens in anyone's life, instead of their spouse meeting needs in their lives, they'll be creating needs. That shows they were not meant to marry. And I tell you this morning, God knows the perfect person that can fit or handle who you are now or who you may likely grow to become and change into. Because of this, trust God who knows better.

PRAYER: Lord, give me my missing rib - that spouse that can complement me today and tomorrow.

YOU MUST SLEEP! - Positioned For Divine Attention Series 004

Genesis 2:21, KJV

"And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof."

Have you undergone a surgery before? If you haven't, I'm not praying for one for you. However, anaesthesia is one of the critical things to get done for any being readied for a surgical operation. I know of a brother who underwent one. They first gave him a dose that ought to knock him out. However, he was still conscious. So, they had to increase the dose. After his surgical operation while asleep, the doctors asked his wife whether her husband smokes or drinks. They expressed their shock at his not passing out with the first dose administered on him. It might be due to his strong bodily constitution or what have you.

Some of you however are like this brother. You're not sleeping even when God intended so. On the choice of who to marry, God wants you to enter sleep mode and be at rest that God is at work for you. When God promised Adam a wife, it wasn't Adam who went about town looking for one. Adam didn't even know God's thoughts for him. It wasn't Adam who began to look for a face that resembles his in the garden. It wasn't Adam who even initiated that process of, "it's not good that the man should be alone again." As a good son, serving God's will in the garden, it was God who sees fit that it's not good that Adam should be alone. The result of that is God promising to make him a helpmeet that'll fit or suit him.

When God revealed His plans to make a helpmeet for Adam to us, God did a wonderful wonder worthy of our study. The Bible says, "God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam..." The usage of anaesthesia by doctors for surgery is directly referenced here. God is the first medical doctor and if you want a surgeon. God knew that if Adam did not sleep and sleep well in unconsciousness, it would be difficult for him to cut through his flesh and take out one of his ribs. If you want to know how unbecoming that could be, go and try it on any animal and see if there won't be struggle and cries. You'll do much harm because you haven't sedated the fellow involved. It'll be a life or death situation in that lab. Removing someone's bone isn't an easy task that just goes well while the fellow is still very much active and awake. Adam for this reason has to sleep and sleep well. That's why the Bible says, "God caused a deep sleep on Adam." It wasn't an ordinary sleep but a deep one. Even if heavy machinery or artillery were used near Adam, he wouldn't have woken up. Why? He has been sedated by God with a deep sleep so that the "making of a wife" for him might not be interfered with by him.

It is the same that God is asking of you. Brother, sister, you need to sleep. You need to release the matter of a spouse into God's hands. Let Him handle it. He's faithful who said, "He'll make a helpmeet for Adam." At day's end, He showed up with that helpmeet - a spouse who can meet needs and complement Adam in his assignment.

Genesis 2:22, KJV

"And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man."

Did you see that? The rib God removed from Adam is what God made a woman and brought to Adam. God gives you your kind, your part, a piece that can complement what is missing or lacking in you. When God took away Adam's rib, that leaves a vacuum in him. God did close it up but with flesh. That vacuum is what the rib turned woman came to fill again.

There's a need for a wife in your life. You might not have seen it but God knows it and He'll make a wife for you that can rightly fill that void. However, you need to sleep. Pray and commit the choice of a marriage partner into God's hands and wait on Him to show you or bring the fellow across you. You'll meet and when you do, you'll be able to attest that this is he or she. Even Adam couldn't hold it. He exclaimed, "this is the bone of my bones and the flesh of my flesh..."

May you have that testimony. However, don't do God's job for Him. You only need to receive a communication on who to marry, who to propose to or wait for His proposal. Except on occasions where you could also receive a witness on the spot. In all, follow God as He leads you.

PRAYER: I am confident in Your outworking for me. I release the choice of a marriage partner into your hands as I trust our path shall cross.

WHY IT SEEMS YOURS IS DELAYED: GOD IS MAKING YOU A HELPMEET - Positioned For Divine Attention Series 003

Genesis 2:18, KJV

"And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him."

I am here to announce to you why it seems since God told you He was making you your helpmeet, you haven't seen Him return with the fellow. "Why hasn't the lady been in view? I don't even know who she is except the Lord shows me."

I know why it has taken time and I know why it's taking time. It is a very simple but delicate reason. When God comes to the realization of Adam needing a mate, He says, it's not good that the man should be alone, I will therefore make him a helpmeet.

It is possible for a man or woman to grow to a place in life where the parents out of care begin to say, "it is not good for you to be alone again." They can see his or her purposeful living - pursuing an excellent career or calling that's doing well. They even know he or she is mature age wise for marriage. Knowing all these, they advocate for a partner. At times, the advice for a partner would come to some people because there's beginning to be a space or role for a helpmeet to play in their lives and is beginning to be obvious. Someone could say, "imagine this big house, should you be the only one in it? You've travelled away for months, shouldn't you have someone who takes thought for you in our place or don't you think you need a partner to help simplify and help you with certain things you're beginning to bug yourself with?"

Mothers are even funnier. They'll say, "bring me a husband/wife" as if they're the ones who want to marry.

God said, "I will make Adam a helpmeet" in verse 18 of Genesis 2. However, the helpmeet in Eve was not brought until verse 22 of the same chapter.

Genesis 2:22, KJV

"And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man."

When God said He would make Adam a wife, He meant it. What God wants you to see is that "making" takes time. The usage of the word, "make" means "I'll settle down and prepare someone suitable for Adam and his needs." That's why God while speaking of the woman He'll give to Adam called her a "helpmeet." Adam has an assignment already. The woman who'll be given her will be someone who can locate herself into that same assignment. Not someone who can't go for foreign missions and forget home because she's a city girl. If Adam is a missionary, he must have an intercessor and a strong woman as a wife. Either a woman that can endure and survive at home with the kids until he shows up from the field or that can bear that life together with him on the field. The fellow must need be a helpmeet - someone who'll be close in assisting in carrying out and fulfilling the daily visions and assignments of the man. That's why it's not every woman who can marry a man of God. Why? If you're not their Helpmeet, you cannot endure the sufferings and reproach that goes with their being called. Many of you think many women want to be pastors' wives. No! You're wrong! They're running from it because many ladies know it's a call to serious sacrifice. "Helpmeet" is someone created to suit or meet certain needs in your life. Let's say, you have a farm. Weeding the farm requires both the use of a cutlass and a hoe. However, you only have a cutlass. If your blacksmith friend visits you and sees the need for a hoe in your life and promises to make you a hoe, it means he'll need to pass through the process of beating steel or iron into making you the finished product that all of us can see and later call a hoe. That was what God intended to do for Adam. To make him a tailor fit helpmeet! If you'll take time to consider the due process that goes into the making of Eve, you'll see that indeed God took time and initiative to create her. That attention that God gives in giving each and everyone of us our rightful correct mate is what we call "making." For Adam, God had to cause him to sleep (so He won't interrupt or intercept God in the making), pick out one of his ribs, close the place up thereof and then make that same rib into the woman.

After the making process, Adam could only have one testimony to share, "indeed, this is the bone of my bones and the flesh of my flesh: she shall be called a woman because she was taken out of man."

Don't rush! God's thoughts for you are of good and of welfare, to give you a hope and a future (Jer.29:11). God is making for you a spouse. A man with a fatherly heart, instructions from above and riches to take care of you. God is making you a woman - one who'll be fashioned after women of old and not esteem the cladding of oneself in wonderful apparels above developing the inner person. A submissive and helpful woman she'll be. Let God take His time. Don't interrupt this process by seeking to end your bachelorhood or spinsterhood yourself. Let it be that God Almighty who sees your need and announces to you He's making for you a spouse will be the same One to end that season when He eventually links you up with the fellow. That's when you can testify like Adam and say, "indeed, I couldn't have married better than this. This is indeed the bone of my bones and the flesh of my flesh. She was specially made for me - to suit me, meet my needs and fit what I'll become or face."

Amen!

PRAYER: Lord, help me to trust You every inch of the way to receiving my own helpmeet. May patience have its full effect on me.

LOST IN SERVICE BUT TAKEN THOUGHT FOR - Positioned For Divine Attention Series 002

Genesis 2:15, KJV

"And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it."

Still on silent labour that positions for greatness. Did you read the verse above? That's Adam in focus. When God created man, He puts him in the garden of Eden. That would have been okay but God told him to dress it and to keep it. God didn't create an idle man. He rather gave him work to do. Work is a means towards realizing and accomplishing oneself and God did exactly that for Adam. Without work, one will naturally tone down and be disillusioned with life. However, work exercises us and makes us relevant and alert even mentally.

Now, before Adam was created, God had to create and fill the earth with creations. He had to create the garden of Eden as well - a space Adam would live in. All animals and various vegetation had been created at that time. In short, all things were ready for the sake of Adam - God's overseer over creation.

The Bible didn't specifically tell us how long Adam lived and worked the garden alone before God created for him a partner but one thing was sure, there was a time frame in-between Adam's creation and the creation of Eve.

Genesis 2:18, KJV

"And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him."

Verse 18 of Genesis hints and verify our suspicion. When Adam was created and was instructed on tilling the garden, he didn't delay. He hit the ground running. If you had visited the garden, you would have found him dressing and tilling the garden - tending to the teeming green life in the garden. He was so swallowed up and consumed by this assignment that Adam took no thought for a spouse. The idea of a spouse by his side did not even hit him. He never thought he needed one. He was just lost in service and in his assignment.

It's after all these and probably on an occasion that the Lord had visited Adam that He saw that it's not good for Adam to be alone. Who therefore brought up the issue of marriage? God! He sovereignly called off singleness or bachelorhood season over them. When God said, "it is not good that the man should be alone", His plan was to bring Adam out of singleness into partnership with a mate.

I pray for you that you won't come under the pressure of time. When people are well within the time frame of a person trusting God for a choice of a marriage partner, they tend to be quiet, hoping on God to lead them or bring the fellow. However, as soon as it seems everyone around them has gotten married and they're the only one left, you'll see them come under the pressure of time and begin to get involved unnecessarily in what doesn't concern them. Adam never for once thought about a woman. God had to take thought for him. All he was busy with was work and the assignment he had received from God. If you were Adam's friend, you could jokingly have said to him, "Mr. work! Is life only work? When will you look beyond work?"

Better illustrated, watch faithful sons who are serving their fathers. The father buys for them what they themselves didn't ask for but which they needed. When God came to the realization that Adam needed a mate, it was out of concern that it's not good that the man should be alone any further. Meanwhile, note the qualities of the man that such a voice came to. That statement came to a man who was lost in his purpose. A man who envisioned nothing but to keep being productive, meeting his daily quota and advancing the kingdom where he is. To such a fellow lost in God's service, a spouse is a reward. It's not a hard nut to crack for them.

Let me tell you this. Mind God and God will mind you. Serve God and God will serve you. Give yourself wholly to God and God will not withhold His almighty from you. Adam unreservedly served the will of God that he knew and God in like manner took thought for him. What he was not considering, God thought about and put in place for him. Let a spouse catch upon you in the place of service. It's better to be discovered and stumbled upon than to push oneself forward for acceptance. That makes you a beggar, begging men with yourself. That's why the expression in the face and voice of Adam is a wow when for the first time he met Eve. When God introduced Eve to him that day, he could not help but gasp saying, "wow, this indeed is the bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called woman..." Gen.2:23).

Adam sees that he cannot be less suited or provided for. He has gotten the perfect match. So, he gives off exclaims. This is the joy and satisfaction that waiting gives those who'll be lost in the cultivation of their garden or purpose until the God who doesn't forget our labour of love in that we have ministered and are ministering visits such with a spouse (Hebrews 6:10).

You're the next to say in awe, "indeed, this is the bone of my bones and the flesh of my flesh. What a perfect match I got!" As for God, He gives the best to faithful and silent servers. You'll have yours.

PRAYER: Lord, I wait on You. Do what only You can do. Locate me in the place of service. Call singlehood to be over on me. Bring me into a new season.
