IN THE BEGINNING - In The Beginning Series 003
John 1:1, KJV
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
There's a beginning different from the beginning we've considered for the past two days. The beginning referenced in Genesis 1:1 isn't the same with that of today that we'll be exploring. That of Genesis 1:1 talks of the beginning of the natural world and creation. That of today centres on the very existence of Jesus (God).
John 1:1 says, "in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God." No one knows when this beginning being referred to here began. It cannot be dated by any human mind. What we know for sure is that this beginning far precedes creation and the world. How did I know that?
Verses 2 and 3 of the following verses say these:
"2 The same was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made."
We just read that all things that were made in Genesis 1 got made by Him. As a matter of fact, there's an emphasis that says, "and without Him was not anything made that was made."
Not even one thing.
This tells us that this beginning doesn't talk about the coming into existence of our physical world but rather hints at the existence of the everlasting God. Let's look at this Psalm for further comprehension.
Psalms 90:1-2, KJV
"1 Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God."
The psalmist notably called God their refuge, house, apartment, bunker and self-contained building, abode from generation to generation. In essence, in God they've been living, moving and having their being. Then, verse 2 says even before the mountains were created or before He formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, He is God!
It means God had been before the mountains were brought forth. I'll like you see something - why the Psalmist used a mountain. A mountain is known for its donkey age, steadfastness and unflinching nature. So, he is saying before something like that was called into existence by God, God had been and had been predestined to be their keeper. As a matter of fact, He is from everlasting (time immemorial) to everlasting (time that cannot be dated or numbered) also.
So, the beginning being referred to here puts God in the class of His own. That's what makes Him the God that He is. That's what makes Him immortality and the ancient of days. If He had been before the ancient mountains ever existed and He hasn't grown old or passed away, then it worth noting that's because of His everlasting nature. And may I tell you that through the new birth, you have come to share in that same nature.
PRAYER: Lord, I thank You for ever being my dwelling place and God, from everlasting to everlasting.
Isa. 10:1-11:16; II Cor. 12:11-21; Psalm 56:1-13; Prov. 23:6-8
