WHY THEN VOID AND FORMLESS? - In The Beginning Series 002

Genesis 1:1-2, KJV

"1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters."

In the teaching that began yesterday, we talked of the pristine world and how perfect and filled with glory it was before the fall and before its de-naturalization. Genesis 1:1 says, "in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth..."

That was the precedent that we incubated on yesterday. The phrase, "in the beginning" took us to a particular point in time when all of creation was new and just freshly rolled out. Nature and that world still bore the perfect mind of God because sin hasn't entered in to make man lose fellowship with God or lose his dominion. Even the ground had not been cursed at this time. So, all was still perfect and new.

However, immediately in verse 2, it seems the truth of verse 1 begins to be contested. Why? The following verse says, "and the earth was without form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep..."

Why without form and void? Does these two words not show that the earth as described earlier isn't perfect? That means we need to understand the meanings of those words in relation with the creation of Genesis 1:1.

The Hebrew expression translated "without form and void" is "tohu va-bohu." Tohu means formlessness, emptiness, wasteland or a place lacking order or function, depending on context. Bohu means emptiness or voidness.

Have you seen a desert before? It rarely have things occupy it. It is like a waste or desolate land. It is like a place where people used to live but which they have left. Over the years, how would it look? It'll depreciate, fall until everything is carried away by the wind or hurried under by the dunes. That's how some civilisations of men was earlier lost or became treasures for archeologists.

So, according to context, that place didn't talk of any moral corruption having happened to the earth or any form of pollution/corruption/damage happening to it. Rather, it reveals the rawness and innocence of that early world. At the completion of a new building, that's how it will look. It will be without form and void until you begin to intentionally curate furniture and home furnishings into that house. Your sitting room will just look bare, having nothing. No settee, no chandelier and no TV. The same will apply to the bedroom. Just empty spaces all around throughout the length and breath of it. It will therefore be without form and void. So that early or just created world (earth) reveals an undeveloped plot of land. It didn't begin to take shape until God calls for light and begins to fill things into it - bringing order and life into it. It is this work that extends towards the creation of man before God looks at all He has created and said it was very good.

Some Christians understand a gap between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2, proposing that God originally created the earth in a perfect state, after which a catastrophe left it desolate.

This interpretation is sometimes associated with the fall of Satan before the creation account continues. However, Genesis 1:2 does not explicitly describe such a catastrophe, and the theory remains disputed.

When you just open a virgin land up for the purpose of creating an housing estate, it can't but be without form and void at the beginning. It's afterwards you'll do estate planning, map out roads, recreation centres etc. What you then do is to bring order, boundaries and life to that human space. Same is what God did here.

I pray for you this morning, may you be fulfilled as God's plan and design.

PRAYER: I shall not be defiled in my state of innocence, purity and perfection. I am rather ordered, beaming with life.
