UNLESS THE LORD STEPS IN - The Lying Mouth Series 001

II Samuel 15:31, KJV

"And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness."

The Bible says in Isaiah 1:9, "except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah." This immediately tells us that there's an exclusive work that the Lord does. You can't and couldn't have done it for yourself. If He doesn't step in, you'd be a failure. That's why Psalm 127:1 still finds relevance here by saying, "except the LORD builds the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keeps the city, the watchman waketh but in vain."

May you not downplay the role of God in your life. Oh, God is alive. He is real. I've experienced that during my hard times when my help could only have come from Him. Right from campus days when I became like a sparrow on a roof top - forlorn, I saw what it means to have the Lord when contrary situations surround a man. 

Absalom takes his time to steal the heart of Israel to himself. When the time becomes ripe, under the disguise of an excuse, he leaves for Hebron where he pronounces himself king. Meanwhile, an announcement goes round throughout all the tribes of Israel at the same time proclaiming him king. II Samuel 15:2 notes that the conspiracy grows stronger and more people join Absalom. By verses 13-14, the news reaching David is that the hearts of the children of Israel have gone after Absalom, prompting David to flee the city. 

As if all these aren't enough, one gossip to David that Ahithophel, David's counsellor, reputed to speak as if it were God has also sided with Absalom (II Samuel 16:23). Having heard all these, no one can help but worry. While he's fleeing from a usurping son, he's not only battling him but one whose expertise and counsel is regarded as infallible.

David knows what it all means for Ahithophel to be with Absalom. He knows if the Lord doesn't step in, he'll lose. That's why at this critical time of distress, he turns to God praying that He will turn the counsel of Ahithophel to foolishness. In essence, he was saying, "I can't hinder him from counselling; but O God, nullify his counsel. Ensure it doesn't make sense to its hearers. Ensure it is not esteemed. Let it sound odd and unworkable. Let it lose effectiveness and potency. Let it not have the power of fulfillment. Corrupt it and turn it upside down."

That's the prayer of David. Is there a gang up against you? Are you up against a very powerful enemy reputed for victory - regarded as a champion who dots his 'i' and crosses his 't?' Just be assured, God is stepping in to ensure what has been working for them till now stops working on your case. David knows that there's no way he could beat Absalom except the Lord by Himself defeats the counsels he'll receive. Though David has an inner man in Hushai who counters Ahithophel's counsel, yet that prayer of David creates an atmosphere for Ahithophel's counsel to be rejected. No wonder the Bible says in II Samuel 17:14, "and Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom."

I ask again, what are the devices, counsels, thoughts, plans, conspiracy, wisdom, enchantment stringed against you? The Lord is undoing them now! Wisdom of the wise is becoming foolish over you and your affairs. 

PRAYER: Lord, make the wisdom of the enemy foolish over me. Let their snares be broken over me and their cords be loosened.
