IT WILL DIE! - Escaping Vain Labour Series 001

Psalms 127:1, KJV

"Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain."

I once asked some questions from my congregant. "Are you the house God is building and the city He is watching?" The reason is easily seen. Nothing hidden at all. If you're not the house God is building or the city He is watching, whatever you do will not work. Instead, things will be dying and collapsing in your hands!

So, your first responsibility is to decipher which way God wants you to go and what He wants you to do. I'll keep saying it. One of the wisest questions ever asked in the Bible is, "what will you have me do" (Acts 9:6, KJV). It was asked by Saul turned Paul. I think this question contributes greatly to his success. He discovers what he should do; then he throws himself into it headlong. That's why he could say he had fought a good fight, finished his course, kept the faith and now is laid up for him a crown of righteousness (II Timothy 4:7-8). You however may not see the need to ask that question unless you get to your wit's end or are double-crossed. Until you see a roadblock before you, you may also never surrender like him. You may still insist on your pride, zeal, education or sovereignty.

You must also know that surrendering without having been confronted is only exhibited by a few. Many people are not self taught. Usually, it's until people see the obvious on the wall that they submit. At the start of their journey, they may not know how to seek in order to discover where to invest their energy until nothing works for them. Whether on primary or secondary contacts anyway, what matters is your surrendering eventually. You shouldn't be on the wrong course, discover or get challenged on the way and still insist on continuing.

Look brethren, if you won't go on a journey that the Lord will later certify as vain, it's better you ask that question early in your life, career or calling. The reason is to save you from doing vain labour. That's one of the things I'm weary of. I hate it. Imagine having run an errand that you shouldn't run before discovering you should have gone somewhere else. Nothing could be that painful. It's even more painful because the errand you have run will not compensate for the one you should have run but until your discovery hadn't been run. That Psalm says, "there are builders who build in vain and there are watchmen who only waste their night staying awake." That is because God's input is missing in their activities. He's intentionally not crowning their efforts with results. How? Instead of robbers being kept away from the city they watch, they'll be allowed by the Lord to prove to them they're in the wrong business or that it's not a matter of power or might (but what the Lord does sovereignly).

When you lack God's call to build a house for Him and have not been given any assignment to watch over a city for Him, that's usually your experience. You'll just see that you don't have the results of a person who's called to build up people or watch over the flocks without the wolf (Satan) taking them. Your lack of capability will be so visible to everyone and yourself that you'll see that you are a misfit. This may force you into rethinking your life. May you not stay awake or exert labour in building something that will not win God's praise or approval. May you rather discover where your cutting edge is. May your work always draw God's endorsement and then recommendations. God said of Jesus, "this is my beloved son in whom I'm well pleased. Listen to Him" (Matt.17:5).

Again, I withhold you from giving attention, exerting effort, spending money on what will not work. Only if people knew, they wouldn't have committed their resources into a business that'll crash. Only if they knew, they'll have known that property will be contested and worth not investing in.  May you not go in the way God is not going or step on the path angels are fearful to tread. May you tremble to always have the Lord with you. May you secure His approval and always carry Him with you. May you not have gone some days to discover that Jesus was left behind. May you not have done vain labour before having the blessing of open eyes.

PRAYER: Today, I'm open to whatever the Lord wants to collect from me. Show me and I'll obey. I have the blessing of open eyes. I see before I leap.
