MY CRY IN A DRY AND THIRSTY LAND - Thirsty In A Dry Land Series 002

Psalms 63:1, KJV

"O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is."

Some of the hottest and driest places on earth, such as the Atacama Desert in Chile, the Lut Desert in Iran and the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia, endure relentless heat and receive little or no rain for long periods. Their cracked patched earth and barren landscapes silently testify to an intense thirst for water: the one thing that can restore life and fruitfulness.

In the same vein, the human soul thirsts for God. No amount of wealth, success, pleasure or achievement can satisfy the deep longing within us. Just as the desert waits for refreshing rain, our hearts long for the living God, who alone can quench our spiritual thirst. As the psalmist declares, "my soul thirsts for God, for the living God: when shall I come and appear before God." (Psalm 42:2). Only His presence can bring the true refreshment, peace and life that every soul seeks.

The Psalms are littered with cries of deep longing for God. As a matter of fact, that's one of the thematic preoccupations of the Psalms. Our verse for today reveals that great quest.

The Psalmist acknowledges God as His God! He's not an atheist at all. He has a personal relationship with God and it delights him that God is his head, cover and Lord. So, he declares him unashamedly.

"Early will I seek you" - does this reveal to you the heart of every seeker? He barely could wait for the day to break as to be reunited with his lover - God. You probably courted your spouse. You'll see that you often pine for them and would like to hear and see their faces even as you go to bed. You might have even said, "they were the best thing that ever happened to me." That's that spell that held the Psalmist also. He has so much missed God that the fellowship of yesterday couldn't do or replace today's. He had to renew his oath and declare his love anew the next day. He prioritizes God beyond his troubles and the seeking after meat.

Then he confesses why he could hardly wait until the day breaks for him to be reunited into God's embrace. See the toast, "my soul thirsts for thee, my flesh longs for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is."

He qualifies it. My heart (the seat of will, emotion, thoughts and moral character) and even his flesh longs for God in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is. The dryer a land is, the thirstier it is to receive rain or water. Such land has focused desire because that's the only one thing it needs desperately. Is the position of the Psalmist your status? Do both your inward core and outward framework thirst all together for God? Have you gotten to a place where you hunger for food or thirst for drink before? Same way, you can have feelings for God. At such times, you'll yearn to pray, worship and seek God's face. You'll want to leave the masses to find a quiet place to commune with Him. At times when things are clouded and you're really busy, to relinquish that feeling, you might just need moments to mutter prayers to Him. There'll be a drawing or attraction to Him. Nothing else will make sense. It'll all be seeing His face - entering into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise that matters to you.

The Psalmist has captured the trouble of lovers and how difficult it is for them to delay to see their beloved. You'll brush everything aside and seek intimacy with God once you train your soul and flesh to thirst and long for God through constant 'mating' (intimacy) with Him. Listen to me, the closer you are to God, the more frequently you'll want to go to Him. There's a fueling to know Him more as often as we come to Him. That's why those who won't lose their longing are pursuers and courtiers of His presence. Do you thirst? Do your soul and flesh thirst after God as a dry and thirsty land?

PRAYER: Draw me nearer, nearer to You Lord.
