THE PULLEY! - Thirsty In A Dry Land Series 001

Acts 17:27, KJV

"That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us."

The Pulley is a metaphysical poem by George Herbert that explains why God did not give humans complete happiness. After creating humanity, God poured out blessings such as strength, beauty, wisdom, honour and pleasure. However, He deliberately withheld one gift, rest. God knew that if people had every blessing, they might become too satisfied with worldly things and forget their Creator. By leaving humans with a sense of restlessness, God ensures they will eventually seek Him for true peace and fulfillment. A part of the poem that references that says, "Let him be rich and weary, that at least/ If goodness lead him not, yet weariness/May toss him to my breast."

God always wants us back. He desires us for Himself, which is why He created us for His pleasure (Rev.4:11). That is revealed in what I chose for this devotional's title, "the pulley." What's a pulley? I believe you earlier learnt that in elementary science while growing up. A pulley is a simple mechanical tool used to lift or move heavy objects more easily. It helps to move things towards us. Imagine using the pulley to draw water from a well. You throw in a container and you begin to draw it to yourself through its rotating wheel. It's that idea that was in God's mind at our creation. That's why He often allows restlessness in our souls. It may be your feeling empty or unsatisfied. God only wants to use it to catch your attention and draw you to Himself afresh. His belief is that when you experience that, you would seek Him for answers and refreshing through intimacy. That's why He additionally planted eternity in our hearts that we may long for Him (Eccl. 3:11).

He's a loving Father who wants to feel you close. Acts 23:27 talks of that desire of God, "...that we should seek the Lord if possible we might feel after Him and find Him."

Acts 17:24-28, KJV

"24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring."

Nothing delights God more than you feeling after Him and finding Him, because He isn't far away. What He wants is a merger with Him to the extent that whatsoever you do in speech and deeds will be in Him and through Him. I pray for you, may you not declare your independence from God. May you constantly feel and thirst after Him. May you pursue this greatest treasure until your will is lost in His and it is said of you that in Him you lived, moved and had your being - doing nothing separated from Jesus!

PRAYER: Lord, help me to be united with You. I want to live, move and have my being in You. I want such a close intimacy with You.
