ABUNDANCE THAT KILLS THE FAITH LIFE - The Bread For Today Series 007

Luke 12:19, KJV

"And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry."

In thread 001, I said there's a type of abundance that could make you declare independence from God. This is that type of abundance. 

It is easier trusting the Lord for your needs when you lack. It won't be because you have mastered faith or you're good at trusting the provision that the Lord releases at its fitting time. It's basically because you've been forced and relegated to trusting Him as a last resort. Your back is on the ground. You have no choice; so you do the last thing to be done: praying, hoping and believing for the help that only God gives. 

You'll be in great danger however when you have abundance and you haven't learnt to put your faith in God. How? You'll hoard and make it your god. Those who haven't mastered the faith life will never release the resources in their hands to meet other people's needs in the hope and assuredness that God will in turn provide for them when they have needs. 

This is not being cautious or being a good steward of resources. I'm talking about being stingy to the Lord. I'm talking about the Lord coming to you to release what you currently hold in your hand but rather lacking the faith/obedience to do so because you're wondering where your own next bread will come from. 

Do you know why Abraham was able to believe God, taking steps to sacrifice Isaac? The Bible says, he counts God worthy to resurrect Isaac from the dead even when he gets killed. 

Hebrews 11:17-19, NKJV

"By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, of whom it was said, 'In Isaac your seed shall be called,' concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense."

Do you have faith that if you cast your seed you'll find it later on? That's not because we give to receive but because God is faithful, always meeting our needs. 

Abraham is a man that has faith and could abide by God's command. He's not the type that says, "a bird in hand is better than two in the bush." He's not a clinger. Clingers don't let go. They embrace tightly what they have gathered and say, " O my soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry."

Once you get here and you refuse to take heed, you might even lose your spirituality. That's most likely if your spirituality has been built around your needs. Now that all your needs are supplied, what else will you be doing and praying for? You may be secured financially or materially wise; but never put your faith in fleeting riches. Riches is described as fleeting for a reason. The Bible says, it has wings. 

Proverbs 23:5, KJV

"Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven."

Irrespective of how blessed you are, let your faith and hope of the future be in the provider and not the provided (provision). This may be the reason why God hasn't allowed some to be promoted. It may be a way of protecting them from getting lost and drawn away by blessings (that they'll idolize). This rich man is of the opinion that his future is secured. Yes, it is. Only if he hadn't put his security in that abundance. What he did wrong was to feel secured and assured of a good tomorrow because he had a Hundred Million Naira in his account that he could spread throughout his remaining lifetime. Immediately, that stiffs the faith life, trusting and gazing on the Father from whom all good and perfect gifts come from. He never let God have His seat in his life. He never acknowledged God as the sustainer and provider for all human beings. He considered his own hands to have provided for him. So, God was totally removed from the equation. 

I pray that you won't fail this test at your turn. You'll be blessed, no doubt. However, will your security be in what you have gathered or what the Lord will continually give you. One time provision is never enough for anyone. We survive on the daily give-aways of the Lord and that ranges from good health, protection to general provision etc. 

PRAYER: Lord, check my heart and sanctify me of stumbling blocks. Help my heart to esteem, love and cherish you above all goods. You're my sustainer (not goods) in my store.
