WHEN HE IS OLD - Vow Series 008

Proverbs 22:6, KJV (emphasis mine).

"Train up a child [of vow] in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

When the Bible says, "train up a child in the way he should go"; when did it intend the training should start? Childhood; not adolescence or adulthood. The problem we pastors especially are facing now is that many people in church have not being trained at all yet they are adults. What danger does it pose? It means they may escape that intended training for the rest of their lives because they may not bring the attention, believability, humility and blankness of a child to it. A child would believe everything hook, line and sinker. An adult would question it. Tell me, if the content is right, who will grow faster? Where the knowledge an adult already has in his head is blocking him from receiving that which is correct and is the original content, what would happen to a child? He would have learnt it even by heart and would have put it into practise while the adult is sacrificing believability and caution in order not to fall into error or be misguided.

All these and many more is why that verse says, "train a child (of VOW) in the way he should go and when he's old, he'll never depart from it." That training must start very early. Hannah had discovered this truth and she wouldn't allow Samuel to have had another education in his mind before sending him off to the College of Priesthood. If she did, his growth would be hampered even if he'll eventually get it right. The first knowledge and way of life might even be distraction to him. I'll give you an instance. Imagine a prostitute who's now born again. Compare her to a lady who has never tasted sex before nor have links to such. Which of them will find it difficult living a chaste life or might be at risk of backsliding into sexual sin and so need greater wisdom and caution to remain on the right path? Obviously the prostitute. That's the exact thing which is unfortunate that happens when we delay the training of our children to when they become even adolescents. Now, don't be comforted yet. Some of you are beginning to say at least it is not too late starting at 7. What are you saying? You're late. If you see what 7 year old footballers are doing in the academy, you'll know it's a lie to postpone the education and training of your child to adolescent or to worsen things adulthood. Training a child in the way a child should go starts from babyhood to childhood etc. The Bible was not mistaken when it says, "TRAIN A CHILD." An adolescent is no longer a child. In this world, the world is already at his finger tips. If he wants to watch pornography, he knows where to go without needing you or consulting you. If he were a child, even if he has that thing call phone, he'll bring it to you and still sheepishly but innocently and ignorantly tell you, "mummy, I want to watch pornography." He or she would mention it because he yet doesn't understand what that word means or what he said he wanted to do though he picked it up from somewhere. An adolescent and one who has lost shamefacedness knows it would be shame if my godly parents find such with me.

Do you now see what we are saying? Brethren, you're instructed to train your child and especially that child of vow (who has a definite way of life he must be ordered into) but the training has been secluded and frozen for childhood. Anytime beyond that, you may as well forget having the overall influence over them. Satan might have become their captain and it might become too late for God who nothing is impossible for doing a thing because you've chosen to incapacitate Him. We train a child in the way he should go but rather remind an adult the way he was trained to go. Do the first before you do the second. The second is a building on the structure of the first.
