THOSE WHO REJOICE BEFORE THE DAY IS DAWN

READ I Kings 1, 2:13-15

I Kings 2:15, KJV

"And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother's: for it was his from the LORD".

A poetry competition took place which saw the attendance of many contestants. At the end of the recitation and dramatization, it was clear that there is no middle ground but that one of the contestants clearly won. As a matter of fact, he was approached by some of his fellow contestants who congratulated him ahead for having won. It was just obvious and too difficult to contest that the prize or award would depart from him to another.

While being congratulated and praised by one of his fellow female contestants as the undisputable winner; this acclaimed winner who has not been pronounced so by the judges kept his cool. He asked his female contestant if she had heard of how the kingdom that everybody knew belonged to Adonijah departed to Solomon. She nodded, "yes". So, this wise fellow said, though it seems revealing that he has won, he won't concede so until he has been proclaimed so. The lady asked, "but all eyes saw you won?" "They did but who knows what might happen? Who knows whether the judge would say because of this or that, the prize shall depart unto another". This is how he refused to be falsely consoled for being a winner until he was indeed called by the judges and awarded as the undisputable winner. Did you learn a thing from that at all? In yesterday devotional, we learnt of the danger of boasting of victory at battle when the war is still at hand. This new case is like unto it.

In today's reading, the kingdom departed from Adonijah to Solomon. While Adonijah was speaking to Bathsheba, he made it known that all eyes expected him to be king and had already had a settled mind for that - he being the elder brother. However, the kingdom turned away and was departed unto Solomon. If you'll remember, Adonijah exalted himself as king, did the rituals of kings and gathered men to run before him like a king. You see, he was not different from a man celebrating victory when he has not won it. Who made Adonijah king? None. Not even King David his father yet he praised himself as king until suddenly what he thought was firmly settled in his hands departed from him because it was not his from the Lord.

In bitterness of soul, he recounted to Bathsheba, Solomon's mother that he and all knew the kingdom was his but however, it departed. He then sued pretentiously for a compensation but to the later forfeiture of his life. Brethren, until you're assured of kingship and the crown placed on your head and your hands firmly touching the rails of the throne, forbid yourself from boasting of being the king because we have learnt of many that the kingdom departed from suddenly. If somebody makes you a promise (except God's), don't boast on the hope of the expected end. You know many promises you have made to people but didn't fulfill also. It should be an enough message to you that men may fail and lie.

This teaching however doesn't contradict confession of faith and the words of affirmation by revelation. If you're shown a thing by divine revelation and you're correctly positioned for its receiving daily, it's bound to come to pass. Let your confidence not be rooted in yourself but He that speaks to you. Only then are you permitted to role model after Paul and confess ahead of the event while saying, "it shall be as you were told" [Acts 27:22-26].

PRAYER: Teach my mouth to confess divine revelation and my body to act out same. I shall not be guilty of vain boasting and acting.
