BEING UNSELFISH IN PRAYER  - Seek Right Series 004

Read I Kings 3:1-10

I Kings 3:11, KJV

"And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;

To mark a selfish man isn't far fetched. Close on his prayer. Watch and analyse it. What is Solomon's unselfish prayer? Let's analyse his prayer from what he didn't pray.

I Kings 3:8-9, KJV

"8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. 9 Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?"

He said, "I'm in the midst of much people who could confuse a judge. So, give me a discerning heart (one I could use to judge them aright)." A discerning heart is for right judgement and you'll agree Solomon got that because the two prostitutes' knotty case proves that to be true (I Kings 3:16). You can't say you have received a gift until it's first tested out. Stop claiming you have a gift that has not been experienced or acknowledged indeed. I said Solomon's prayer is unselfish. How? What he asked for is not even for himself in that it's not a thing meant to meet his own needs. He said, "give me a discerning heart that I may be able to judge this Thy people aright." He asked for that for the good and welfare of the people. Will it be good to call someone a judge yet switches wrong for right? Is that not why justice has been perverted in many societies and the guiltless taken to be guilty? Who wants to live under such type of government where the just are punished and the offenders walk freely and boastfully. So that there might be fear of God, respect for the king and fairness amidst the citizens; that the righteous may know that no offender shall go unpunished and so keep up with being good, he asked for good judgement. So tell me, what benefit does that give him? He requested for a gift to the benefit of others and that's the same thing the anointing on any minister is for. It's to minister to the masses and not the carrier. The minister like myself must as well learn how to receive by faith for his own daily victorious living if he has needs.

That's what God noticed which made Him full of swelling impression for Solomon. He said, "you have not asked for YOURSELF riches, for the life of your enemies or for long life." These are the common everyday prayers multitudes pray day in, day out for themselves yet without any remarkable progress.

Solomon transcends being selfish. He went to live beyond the request of the masses. A true mark of a king who must be discerning than the subject. Today, mark yourself different. Be unselfish in pray. Ask that God might bless others using you. Ask that you might be used of God to meet the needs of others. Let it always and mostly be for others and in that you'll be satisfied and your own needs met.

PRAYER: Lord, open my eyes to the kind of prayers to pray in this season of my life. I transcend the common requests.

BIBLE IN A YEAR: Genesis 20:1-22:24; Matthew 7:15-29; Psalm 9:1-12; Proverbs 2:16-22
