MORNING WINGS DAILY DEVOTIONAL GUIDE - Olusola ADEJUMO

WHAT WILL SUFFICE US ONCE SEEN

John 14:8, KJV

"8 Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us."

What brought about Philip's request to be shown the Father? Jesus had said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me" John 14:6, KJV.

From this response of Jesus, the Father is therefore portrayed as the end of the road for everybody. Jesus is a road to Him. The full stop of everyone willing to make it to eternity is to pass through Jesus (believe in His finished works) and receive Him into his life. Doing this secures you a passage way to the Father.

When Philip heard this, he said a statement that doesn't reveal foolishness but a heart seeking after the final cure of all things (though also an insulting statement to what Jesus is and stands for). He said "show us the Father and that will suffice (satisfy) us." He asked that in sincerity and not to boycott Jesus whom he has been with since. He was honestly looking for the better means.

'Suffice' means 'and that will do; and that will be enough, and that will settle it" He wanted the final answer. From Jesus' statement to them, he (Thomas) perceived Jesus as only a road to the Father and the Father, the ultimate goal - the One to get a hold of while turning one's attention away from Jesus - who introduces Himself as the way to the Father (but not the Father). However, that's not how it works. If I ask you too which will you choose between a passage to something and the thing itself? All of us wants the ready made. The final of the final.

Jesus was shocked as to how Philip could ask to be shown the Father. He however corrected this view and said, "Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?" John 14:9.

Is that false? No. Jesus is the express image of God. It's like a son who resembles the father and carries his DNA. If you sight him, you obviously have seen the father. However, Jesus is even more than this description.

Hebrews 1:3, KJV

"Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person..."

This is how things settle as Jesus revealed Himself as the satisfaction Philip was thirsty for. In reality, all of us is seeking for what will satisfy us and ends our going to and fro continuously. The woman at the well with Jesus said to Him also, "Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw" John 4:15. In essence, she was looking for a panacea  - a cure it all. Is there a thing that satisfies truly? Yes. Jesus does permanently and eternally though human needs are insatiable. We have people that are looking to God to marry, give birth or even get a thing done. If they should be in front of God, you'll see what their prayer would be. They'll say things like, "if God could do this for me, I'll be satisfied." Does it mean they won't want to prosper in other areas after that singular breakthrough again? No. That saying only expresses what their major thirst is and how much they covet it is met and met quickly. That's why Philip when he heard Jesus mention the Father as the One that matters in all manners quickly catches on that opportunity to say, "show us the Father and that will settles it." He sees the Father as greater than Jesus and he wanted the greater to be his. That's wise of him.

He was in search of what will suffice and settles the hunger for the divine inside man. All over the world and across human races, people are yearning for the Divine and one that can suffice them. Some in their search have turned to other gods and have missed it. Today, I announce to you the living water - Jesus Himself Whom when received, He suffices and settles all. That's why that woman of Samaria pleaded with Jesus to give her the water that quenches thirst once and for all. God knows your desire. He bore with Philip and revealed Himself as the One that satisfies once and for all. May you receive that which once possessed, one gets weaned from further enquiries and searches in Jesus name. Your going to and fro for an answer ends today.

PRAYER: Pray for the repentance of the world. Pray for the meeting of any kind of needs.
