SAVED TO PREACH JESUS - Minding Your Calling Series 006

Luke 9:59-60, KJV

"59 And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God."

As you follow Jesus, God will give you several adjustments in order to situate you correctly in His will. If you'll heed it, you'll always be in the will of God. When this fellow wanted to delay or postpone his call to discipleship, what does Jesus tells him? "Let the dead bury their dead: but you go and preach the kingdom of God."

That specific instruction to him is a love instruction to keep his feet from straying or else he would stray and he won't know it. Let me tell you something. Beware of the slightest of what has capacity to take you away from your calling. It won't first manifest as a stumbling block. It'll come in the form of an obligation - even a family necessity or need. However, there's a bait attached to it. If you ever heed it, it'll take you down a road where you'll miss the will of God.

What's wrong with going to bury one's father? However, time will not allow Jesus to release this man to that assignment. As far as Jesus is concerned, he should let the dead bury their dead. The dead are the people who are not spiritually attuned to God's things like that same called man. They are not spiritually alive so they can find it acceptable enough to engage in common affairs. They are the normal people who Jesus believes could give attention to the things of the earth. And as normal people who are not spiritually alive, they're looking forward to a party. They're looking forward to a ceremony. You can't organize a better party than those who specialize in it. Those Jesus refers to as the dead own a degree in helping you plan and making your event go well. They are in every family. They may even be amidst your relatives, friends or colleagues. Jesus was telling that man to release that responsibility to them. Even behind him, they'll give his father a befitting burial than he could have done.

However, there's an urgent assignment for him. It's to go and preach the kingdom of God. The way Jesus brought the preaching of the kingdom across to this man tells us that there's an urgency about preaching that kingdom. First, the Bible says, "do you not say in four months and there comes the harvest. Look at the field and see that the field is ripe" (John 4:35).

When Jesus said, "but go thou and preach the gospel", I want to believe his motivation were these verses above. The fact that the field is ripe and even that the labourers are few. If not, Jesus could have given this man a little time to just bury his father and return to Him. However, there's an urgency. Jesus is recruiting every man that he sees, especially those he could definitely mark for calling. He's not only recruiting them, He's putting them to work immediately. He's unfolding before them the very reason for which he has saved, called or brought them to Himself - to go and preach the kingdom of God.

In Series 001 of this teaching, I quoted lines from John Donne's poem, The Good Morrow that I can paraphrase as, "Let sea discoverers to other worlds have gone,

But we have ourselves, one for each."

It means irrespective of what the focus of sea discoverers are, we also shall focus on what is ours that we have found. The one Jesus has found for any disciple is to follow Him and preach God's kingdom. It's a holy call that can take the lifetime of anybody. It is enough work that can even be done on a full time basis.

My own prayer is this, may God open your eyes to what could entangle you and seduce you out of the calling that you should enter into when you get to that juncture of temptation. May you hear a voice behind you saying, "choose this above that."

As for the burying of the dead, it'll come and go. However, if your calling or what you should use your life to do or serve slips from your hands, you'll suffer and be held accountable at the judgement.

PRAYER: I shall not be seduced from the road of the calling.

WHY ARE YOU NOT FOLLOWING? - Minding Your Calling Series 005

Matthew 19:21-22, KJV

"21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions."

That's a good question to ask. "Why are you not following?" My own prayer is that God will come for you when you don't have much price to pay. When God came to call me to followership, I was on campus. I didn't have much to lose. As I followed intently, I realized God's call on my life and it wasn't difficult for me any longer to separate myself to that holy calling. Though I had reasons to unfollow but I thank God they were all not tangible enough to take me from ministry or following Jesus.

The call to follow could come in a simple call to serve as a campus executive. As I write this, I recalled many students that were chosen as executives but who went back or denied that call. Many of them didn't leave campus before we saw the dangers of not being rightly hooked up by God. Some wander off without a balanced Christian life while some even got impregnated to our shock. If they had heeded that call, it would have pruned down their lives and hooked them up to a higher living.

A call to follow Jesus is a blessing in disguise. As the called, you'll have no eyes for certain things. You'll just escape the ordinary man's temptations.

Meanwhile, some have become something before their call to followership or discipleship came. So, it became difficult for them to leave all to follow Jesus. A typical example is this young wealthy man. On several occasions, some wanted to follow Jesus intimately (to wherever He goes) but Jesus denied them that entry. He told them, "foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests but the son of man has no where to lay his head." He dissuaded them big time! However, this one got a free invite to follow Jesus but he still squandered it. Let me ask you. "What have you become that is hindering your discipleship or following Jesus?" "What do you possess that's fighting your destiny journey so hard?" I want to believe that God had an apostolic destiny for this young man and if he had followed, he could have contributed to the writing of the books of the Bible. However, he couldn't follow. When it comes to yielding up his wealth to follow Jesus, he just couldn't do it. He went away sorrowing because the thought of yielding up his properties was too big for him to accommodate. May nothing not be too big for you to yield to follow Jesus or be separated into your calling.

In following Jesus, you have to count your wealth or any qualification of yours as dung. Unless you see it like Paul sees it, you cannot fully embrace your newly found call and way of life. There are those God has a prophetic journey for and He'll sure call them into it at a certain time. May you be ready to pay the price. May you not be persuaded out of that call. What would have happened if this man had followed Jesus and learnt of Him. Is there anyone who followed Jesus so closely without Jesus having a definite plan for? I believe he would have become great in God's will. Beyond his business, he'll have become a fisher of men with special graces that we could be reading today. Probably he could have outrival Paul because he's also a sound young man.

Be observant. God's investment in your life since your childhood is not in vain. According to the confession of this man, he's been faithfully keeping the law since a child. It means this man to a good extent has fulfilled a good part of being thought of as a minister. He's not someone who sins erratically all around. He has mastered his own body and conquers certain innate passions.  He is a responsible young man. All he needed to do is to be meek and submit to discipleship so that one day, he could do the work that Jesus does. I pray, may nothing hinder your journey into your tomorrow.

PRAYER: Lord, I yield all up. Nothing shall occupy my heart and consume me like You.

SEEKING PERMISSION DOESN'T EXCUSE OR JUSTIFY YOU - Minding Your Calling Series 004

Matthew 8:21-22, KJV

"21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.  22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead."

Many times when people want to misbehave or do what they know is sinful, they look for someone with a spiritual authority and standing, and seeks him out on what his view is on that thing. May God sensitize many ministers to this truth so that in their speech or feedback to such people, they won't leave any ground for compromise.

I've had many people chat with me who wanted to do something (that their heart was already holding them to ransom for) but wants to silence that voice by seeking to hear what someone like me would say. These are spiritual criminals! Now, let me tell you, irrespective of what any man of God tells you on any matter, God's voice speaking inside you to convict you is many times stronger and safer. And if you disobey it, you sin. You know what the will of God is when that voice convinces and convicts you of the steps you want to take. Seeking for someone's permission or permissive will to sin or misbehave won't still justify you or make you right. It is your heart (the Spirit inside you) that convicts you. The Bible says, "when the Holy Spirit whom the world couldn't receive comes, He'll convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgement" (John 16:18). When you're experiencing that, you don't need to ask any titular man of God what their opinions are on any matter. God already speaks to you. Adhere and you'll know peace. Break that truce in your spirit and meet with guilt and fresh convictions for going wrong.

That's the same thing that this disciple requested of Jesus. What shocks me is that the Bible calls him a disciple - meaning he's been following Jesus. However, he got to a juncture where family obligation wanted to make him deny Christ for the meanwhile. He was even asking permission from Jesus as if that would make it right to go back and bury his father. But Jesus was firm with him. He replies, "let the dead bury their dead. You follow me."

You must know that whenever there's a clash between the kingdom of God, call to discipleship or call to God's services, you must let God and His kingdom be your priority. This is one of the costs of discipleship or service to God. Those of you who know the truth but are looking for someone to change or sanction falsehood for you are wrong and may God give you answers like Jesus gave to this man. He must have been shocked that Jesus didn't grant his excuse. Some of you think you can hide under excuses that look right. Some of you are using family and obligations to them to defraud God and His kingdom. God sees your heart as that doesn't make you right. Many of you are there who know that some obligations would be taken care of but you just want to abscond from God. As a matter of fact, God gives some of you a strong, daring and all-in-one spouse because you won't always be at home but travel for the gospel's sake. God has seen your future and therefore has rewarded you with a wife who's economically independent and uncaring after the things of the world. She's a woman who can jeopardize her life and sacrifice for Jesus yet you're here seeking excuses to pamper the matter when souls are wasting on the field. You'll report to God what you become with the grace and those provisions He made available to ease you in discharging His will.

God can read your heart. He won't release you. Rather, He'll keep calling, equating and calling you towards your high calling. You can abscond by yourself but God won't release you. His call to you too is, "let the dead bury their dead. You, follow me."

It is time to stop hiding under unnecessary excuses that we know are unnecessary but which we're still bringing to God to test if He'll rubber stamp them and release us. If you know what is right and you're not doing it, the Bible calls it sin. Don't be like the Pharisees who already have answers to their questions but still are rather looking for means of trapping Jesus by looking forward to what He'll say. Some of you already have answers because the Holy Spirit already witnessed to your heart. You don't therefore need the testimony of another man. Adhere and obey in the light of God's revelation to you. No man can speak strongly or convincingly to you than the Holy Ghost. Don't exchange His words for men's.

PRAYER: May I not be a convenient Christian, hypocritical in act and dubious in behavior. May I be persuaded by God at once and not seek more convictions leading to jangling.

THE POSSIBILITY OF BACKSLIDING - Minding Your Calling Series 003

Matthew 8:21, KJV

"21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.  22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead."

There's the possibility of backsliding or going back on your call. If you looked at the two verses above, you'll see that the fellow who raised the issue of going back with Jesus is someone the Bible recognizes as a "disciple."

A disciple is someone with a call to follow and who may be already following. However, this brother received a situation report where he was serving as an apprentice in order to become a master in the footsteps of Jesus that a family member just died and that he must be involved in the burial rites. Who will not want to pay his last respect to his father?

Then, the temptation arose. What's the temptation? The temptation to participate. The temptation to be seen to have participated. The temptation not to be a lesser son of one's father. The temptation to be called a good son by the community for having shown up. So, he told Jesus to let him go back and attend to the family - to the burying of his father.

However, what did Jesus reply with. "Follow me and let the dead bury their dead."

Do you know why Jesus responded with that? While it's good to pay last respect to our parents, family or the dead yet it must not be at the expense of our calling or the destiny training that we shouldn't carry over. Priority is necessary in this life. The dead is dead and gone. His assignment has ended. He cannot desire or devise to do anything again. So, why should a man that has achieved his own and closed his chapter take you out of your own holy call to follow Jesus even where you are in the hinterland serving as a missionary, a gospel bearer or a minister. Jesus is teaching us priority. Whenever there is a clash between services to God and social occasions, we know which to let go.

Don't worry. The dead will be taken care of. When Jesus said, "let the dead bury their dead", it means there are certain people on ground already who'll ensure the dead man is given a befitting burial. As for you, God has collected you for Himself. You're His chosen and because you are, you must be sanctified and hallowed unto Him. God has special jealousy protecting you from any other thing that wants to use you or have your attention. That's why Jesus' reply to that man was, "follow me, let the dead bury their dead."

God will continue to free your time especially if you have calling, are called or have been sent. God wants you to have time not only to imitate Him but to serve Him. As such, God can raise certain people to do some common assignments that you could have been distracted to do. By this, He preserves you for the holy and your calling. As long as you carry the vow to serve God that is second to none and it shows in your heart, God will free time for you. He'll give you a job that doesn't contest with your Bible Study or preaching engagements. He'll preserve your time out of jealousy and you'll remain the sanctified and separated of the Lord.

I pray for you, nothing shall take you out of God's presence, His imitation and His service.

PRAYER: Lord, may I decipher between the common and the holy. May I not allow emotion and attachment to family to get the better of me.

LET THE DEAD BURY THEIR DEAD - Minding Your Calling Series 002

Matthew 8:21, KJV

"21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father.  22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead."

How easily we are distracted in this life! Today, God will be meeting the needs of those of you who have received certain instructions from God but have receded from it. Some of you know you're called for sure and that you've heard the Master's voice saying, "you, follow me." However, over time, you have had need to stop following to go back to the things Jesus saved you from. He saved you from the distraction of, "all these things (riches in the world)" that you're now pursuing when He told you to follow Him in discipleship so He could make you a fisher of men and deliver you into your calling like He made of the apostles in the Bible.

However, what's the story we're reading about you now? That you've gone back. That you've backslided. Though you began with Jesus but you didn't walk the whole miles. You went back somewhere. You went back to your vomit and became a sorry case.

That Bible portion we're considering says, "you follow me but let the dead bury their dead."

It is their dead - their responsibility and affairs to take care of. When you were called to follow Jesus so you could be delivered into ministry, you were saved from the chase of those common things. God is saying I should tell you, "you have a bounty (calling) on your head. You have received a call to follow Me as an apprentice so you can become a master someday in the calling." It means you have to be focused, concentrated on your training and the lifestyle that'll make you that outcome. You therefore cannot or should not be caught minding the businesses of other men who haven't received your own  call.

What God is advocating for is specialization of jobs. Each of you have received your tasks. Why should you now be called from your own divine call and task to the secular and common again?

Mind your business brethren is the voice re-echoing.

PRAYER: May I not entangle myself with the common.

LET THE DEAD BURY THEIR DEAD - Minding Your Calling Series 001

Matthew 8:21 - 22, KJV

"21 And another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. 22 But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead."

I believe I am called and that I am anointed to bring an anointed explanation to my audience as I teach. Over the years, this has been proven beyond any shadow of doubt to God's glory.

In Good Morrow by John Donne, the poet writes:

"Let sea-discoverers to new worlds have gone,

Let maps to others, worlds on worlds have shown,

Let us possess one world, each hath one, and is one."

In this monologue, the speaker's address is to a lover. Despite the many ongoing activities or businesses in the world they live in at that time, he (the speaker) canvasses for solitude time with the lover where both of them could intertwine. It's for this reason the poet says, "let sea discoverers to new worlds have gone..." It means while they are busy discovering new worlds (because that's their own assignment which they love more than life), we also shall be busy, wrapped in each others' arms - enjoying love (in our own cocoon).

These expounded lines have a message to pass to you. We all cannot be busy on a thing. We've been given different subject matters and assignments to mind in this life. While sea discoverers to new worlds have gone, the speaker is rather possessing one world with the lover. He begs to differ!

What a world! A world of many assignments and mandates. A world where we have arrays of vocations that call men to themselves and from which men must choose which one they'll give their lives or time to.

That's why a statement like, "you, follow me but let the dead bury their dead" finds fulfillment as a reality. In the next few days, may you be well rounded in calling, consecration and the need to pursue with all diligence that which you have been called and separated to.

The poet speaker in this poem does not have eyes for going on wide and bogus adventures to find new sea or trade routes or discover new worlds. Rather, he's concerned with home and cordial affairs with the lover. He has found something to mind and concentrate on different from what others esteem and are dying for. That's why the Bible says:

Psalms 104:16-18, KJV

"16 The trees of the LORD are full of sap; the cedars of Lebanon, which he hath planted; 17 Where the birds make their nests: as for the stork, the fir trees are her house. 18 The high hills are a refuge for the wild goats; and the rocks for the conies."

As for the stork (a type of bird), the fir trees are her house. That's the colony she has found to colonize, enjoy and live in. But the same does not apply to the wild goats. The high hills are her house while again the conies choose the rocks to live in.

You'll see that all of them are not called to colonize the same territory. They rather have a focus on which particular area to subdue or colonize. As for the wild goats, look no more, the high hills are her house! Are you looking to contact the wild goats? Go to the high hills.

What catches our attention or what we give it to will always be different. In this life and in your race as a Christian, may it be that it'll be only your calling that'll command your attention and have you fully. Amen!

MADE JUST FOR YOU! - Positioned For Divine Attention Series 005

Genesis 2:20, KJV

"And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him."

The Bible says, "and for Adam, there was not found a helpmeet for him." In the former teachings in this series, I had told you who a helpmeet was and what purpose he or she serves in your life. Have you seen hook and eye before? Each of those materials are right for each other because they help each other fulfill their roles. The eye is made so that the hook can easily have a penetration into it and cling to it. If one was not suitably made for its other partner, there wouldn't have been harmony that we see with the hook and eye. They are a perfect example of a helpmeet to each other. They meet the needs of each other.

When the Bible says, "and there was not found a helpmeet for Adam", it means after a search of a kind, no mate was found for Adam who could fittingly fit who he was made and what he was given to do. No animal despite how well created it is could fittingly play the role of a wife in the life of Adam. There couldn't have been any connection or understanding between them. Animals and humans are not of the same species. So, they shouldn't even mate though they can bond or relate. God put that into consideration as well before the Bible says, "but for Adam there was not found a helpmeet for him (amidst all perused)." If it was an animal God had brought, Adam wouldn't have said, "this is the bone of my bones and the flesh of my flesh..." Why? There'll be an obvious denial because that animal would have been very far from the very image or likeness of Adam (a human). Adam wouldn't have seen himself in her! That's why that verse says, "and for Adam there was not found a helpmeet for him." But what happened when Eve was paraded before Adam. Adam gave a cry, "this is the bone of my bones and the flesh of my flesh: she shall be called a woman because she was taken out of man." He saw himself in her. Indeed, was it not Adam's bone (a rib) that God made into a woman? No wonder, the semblance Adam noticed.

The usage of "not found" in that verse shows a kind of observatory search might have been done on creation but without a testimony of having found a mate for Adam. Don't think God is not at work on your behalf. If you haven't had His feedback, it may be that He hasn't found for you a helpmeet yet. Don't forget, a helpmeet is the hook that can fit effortlessly into your eye. Compatibility is important to consider here and God does that. If he or she is a Muslim or any other unbeliever, he or she isn't different from the animals that aren't suitable for Adam. The command is that you must not be joined to an unbeliever in marriage (II Cor. 6:14).

Vehicles are machines designed for transportation. They come in many forms, each created for specific purposes. Cars are primarily for personal transport of a few individuals, offering convenience and privacy. Jeeps are renowned for their ruggedness, versatility and exceptional off-road abilities. Seeing this, if you're going for a military expedition, you're likely to go with a jeep rather than an ordinary car as jeeps were originally designed as light military reconnaissance vehicles during World War II, proving their ability to traverse incredibly challenging terrain.

The same goes with a choice of a marriage partner. We don't have the same nature or temperaments. One who's forgetful or careless by nature as a phlegmatic/sanguine may need a complement in a choleric/melancholy who does things perfectly to details and on time. What God does is to give you a complement. So, when that Bible verse says, "but for Adam, there was not found a helpmeet", it means one who'll understand and partner with Adam at his level was not found for him. Don't forget a rib was missing in Adam which went into the creation of Eve. This metaphorically hints at needs in the life of Adam that only Eve - that right woman: who's the perfect lost rib could fill because a space or need was created in Adam when a rib was removed from him. Spouses are like vehicles. They come in different forms. Some are for pleasure and some for rugged terrains. For certain reasons i.e the calling of suffering on some people; they might need to be given a spouse that is like a jeep - rugged, enduring, not easily angered etc. If you're a man who'll be away for months, you need to have a rugged wife who can carry on with the kids behind you as if you never existed in her life. You need a woman who lightly esteems sex and envies affection when she sees others having it. You need a woman or a man who cannot backslide into adultery because you've gone on a study, business trip, evangelistic crusades etc.

As such, God makes for each of us to suit us. It is bread and butter that can complement themselves. God is that wise. Look, God knows your frame, yearnings, character, weaknesses, strengths, future problems, calling. He makes a spouse for you who can fit into all these. Until then, you haven't found a helpmeet. If the opposite happens in anyone's life, instead of their spouse meeting needs in their lives, they'll be creating needs. That shows they were not meant to marry. And I tell you this morning, God knows the perfect person that can fit or handle who you are now or who you may likely grow to become and change into. Because of this, trust God who knows better.

PRAYER: Lord, give me my missing rib - that spouse that can complement me today and tomorrow.
